Betty looked at the wall clock and frowned. 21:30. He hadn\u2019t even bothered to come home for the special dinner she\u2019d prepared! This was the last straw!<\/p>\n
\u201cThen why didn\u2019t you come home for dinner?\u201d Betty asked. \u201cI made a special dinner and lit candles and set out flowers and you didn\u2019t show up! Where were you? Out with another woman?\u201d<\/p>\n
Donald grinned. \u201cYes,\u201d he said and stepped aside. Standing there was a slim girl in her twenties with Betty\u2019s blue eyes and Donald\u2019s wide smile.<\/p>\n
\u201cHannah!\u201d Betty cried and ran down the steps. She would have fallen if Donald hadn\u2019t caught her. She threw her arms around the girl and started crying.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, Hannah,\u201d she sobbed. \u201cIt\u2019s been too long! I\u2019ve missed you so much!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHi, Gran Betty,\u201d Hannah said. \u201cI\u2019m sorry we were so late, but my flight was delayed. Poor Gran Donald waited for hours!\u201d<\/p>\n
Betty turned to her husband. \u201cYou knew she was coming and you didn\u2019t tell me?\u201d she protested.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t KNOW,\u201d Donald said triumphantly. \u201cI arranged it! It was supposed to have been your anniversary surprise, but the flight was late\u2026 You\u2019ve been complaining about how much you miss your only grandchild, so I sent her a plane ticket!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, Don!\u201d Betty cried, and put her arms around her husband. \u201cI\u2019m sorry! I thought\u2026 I started thinking crazy things\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBetty,\u201d Donald said tenderly. \u201cI haven\u2019t looked at another woman in fifty years and I\u2019m not about to start now.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDonald,\u201d Betty said. \u201cWhat did I do to deserve you?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d Don said. \u201cBut I can tell you we\u2019re going to have a hell of a time getting all my stuff back in the house where it belongs!\u201d<\/p>\n
With Hannah\u2019s help, Don and Betty got everything tidied up and sat down for a midnight snack. \u201cBy the way,\u201d Donald said. \u201cI have another surprise for you. Tomorrow night we\u2019re having a party with all our children and all our friends. I\u2019ve arranged for Father Bartholomew to be there so we can renew our vows.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut what am I going to wear?\u201d gasped Betty.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know about the dress, but I have a ring!\u201d Don said, then he dropped down to one knee and pulled out a little jewelry box. \u201cBetty Delancy Carmichael, will you marry me again?\u201d<\/p>\n
The next day, the Carmichaels celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in style and Betty looked lovely in a pretty cream suit and a little veil. As Donald kissed her, she vowed never to doubt him again as long as she lived.<\/p>\n
