Children are always going to break your heart. This was something that I learnt the hard way after trusting my daughter, Angela, completely.<\/p>\n
Since Angela was born, I began saving for college. I needed to know that irrespective of what life threw my way, that I would be able to educate my child.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think you can wait until she\u2019s a little older,\u201d my husband, Holden, said. \u201cWe can do it together.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can add to her college fund later,\u201d I said, looking at my baby girl. \u201cBut I\u2019m going to start from next month. I wasn\u2019t able to study, Holden. And it was because we didn\u2019t have the opportunity to do so. Angela is going to get that opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay, Caroline,\u201d my husband said. \u201cYou start it now, and I\u2019ll add to it in a year. The house will be paid off, and I\u2019ll be able to put that money into the fund.\u201d<\/p>\n

He squeezed my hand in reassurance, and I knew that we would both do anything to give our daughter the entire world.<\/p>\n
But maybe I should have paid more attention to Angela when she graduated from high school.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you sure you don\u2019t want me to help you with your college applications?\u201d I asked my daughter when we went grocery shopping one day.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, Mom,\u201d she said, adding a bottle of juice to the cart. \u201cI can handle it by myself. But thank you for offering.\u201d<\/p>\n
So, I left her to handle the application process by herself. She was an ambitious and responsible kid, so I thought that she could handle it with her eyes closed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI may ask you to read my application essay, Mom,\u201d she said one evening as I was cooking dinner. \u201cBut there\u2019s still time to get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t think much of it and gave my daughter her space to navigate it.<\/p>\n
And then one morning, she came into my bedroom and asked me to transfer all the money that we had been saving for her college fund.<\/p>\n
\u201cSure, darling,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019ll go down to the bank later today and sort it out.\u201d<\/p>\n
